Frequently asked questions
People often have a lot of questions when they start to think about coming for therapy. I have listed below some of the most common questions I am asked with general answers. If you cannot find the question or answer you are hoping to find please feel free to contact me via the contact form here.contact me via the contact form here.
What can I expect in my first session?
In your first session we will start to get to know each other. We will discuss confidentiality, and its limits, and go through the paperwork that I will have sent out ahead of the appointment. You will get a chance to start to talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you would like from the sessions. If there are any safeguarding concerns, then we will talk about that too. It may feel a little more formal than subsequent sessions, partly because of the paperwork but also partly because we don't yet know each well.
What sort of things do people talk about in therapy?
Anything! Everyone will bring their own problems that they want to talk about and find ways to resolve. We will work together to ways that work for you to find a new way forward in your life.
How many sessions will I need?
This is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string?" question. The answer is, possibly annoyingly, "however long it takes" and that will be different for everybody. I work in an open-ended way, so for some people this might mean just a few sessions but for others it will be longer. On average most people tend to come for around 16-20 sessions, but others may want to come for longer, for several months or even a few years. It is not something that I will dictate to you, the length of time you come to work with me is up to you. The choice is yours and is something we can talk about when we met.
How often will I need an appointment?
For most people weekly appointments prove the most useful. However, I do also understand that therapy is expensive and can be hard to finance, so fortnightly appointments can also be booked. Any less frequently than this, on a regular basis, can interrupt the process of therapy and potentially extend the time spent in therapy, or contribute to a sense of the therapy not progressing. A good therapeutic relationship is key to better outcomes in therapy and longer gaps in between appointments can make it harder to get to know each other well.
How much does it cost?
My fee for individuals having therapy is £55 an hour, for couples it is £70 an hour. Fees are payable by bank transfer at time of booking.
What days do you work?
Appointments are available Monday to Wednesday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Thursday 9am-1pm. Sessions are 60 minutes long.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
Appointments may be cancelled or rearranged without incurring the session fee so long as it is done more than 24 hours in advance. I will accommodate changes in the same week if I have availability to do so. Where appointments are cancelled by a client with less than 24 hours’ notice the full fee is payable.
Is The Burrow Accessible for people with disabilities?
My office is based in a converted garage. Seating is accessible for people of larger size. There is a small step to access the room. I have a 2-person sofa, hard back chairs, foot rests for clients to use. There is a portable wheelchair ramp which can be made available once I know it is needed. I do not have a hearing aid loop system. Toilet facilities are accessible to people able to climb the two steps into the house with the aid of a hand rail. Unfortunately, the toilet facilities are not accessible to wheelchair users.
Do you offer a service to people of all ages?
At the Burrow I see adults, from 18 years old, I do not have an upper age limit. While I have spent many years working with children in other settings, I am not trained to offer counselling to children and young people below the age of 18.
Do you hold a current Disclosure and Barring Service check?
I hold a clean, enhanced, DBS certificate which is updated annually by the Disclosure and Barring Service.
Are you insured?
I hold Professional Liability Insurance with Towergate. Proof of insurance can be provided on request by clients.
Is there parking available?
There is off street parking available on site at The Burrow. It is possible to park on the street, however the road is very narrow so it is preferred if clients park on the driveway.
